New Delhi: Sanitation workers of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) went on a strike on Saturday to protest against the non-payment of salaries and in support of their demand for permanent jobs.
They protested outside Shahadra (south) zone office of EDMC and dumped garbage on the streets.
"The Delhi government is not releasing funds for salaries. They have money for advertisement, to pay their employees but they do not have money for the poor safai karamcharis. They should avoid this kind of politics," said Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay.
The striking workers threatened to continue their protests across Delhi if their demand was not met, including permanent jobs, payment of arrears and cashless medical insurance.
The mayors of three different corporations met Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to discuss how to end the strike but with no result.
