MUMBAI: After two weeks of the atrocious incident in West Bengal where a 72-year-old nun was raped during an attack at a convent school, two persons have been arrested from West Bengal and Mumbai.
The CID made their first arrest (Sikander Sheikh Alias Salim) in the case in Mumbai today following Gopal Sarkar’s arrest in West Bengal. The incident outraged the country and led to massive protests on the streets of several cities.
The nun was assaulted after a group of six men attacked a church and a convent school at Ranaghat, approximately 100 km from Kolkata on March 14. While two men have been arrested so far, at least four faces were captured by the CCTV footage.
Salim, a part of the group that damaged the school and damaged a bust of Jesus Christ in a chapel before breaking into the nuns’ quarters, raped the senior citizen.
The attackers after locking all the nuns in a room dragged one of them and raped her following a robbery of approximately Rs. 12 lakh from the office cupboard and some valuables from the chapel.
The nun who was hospitalized soon after the incident stated that she had forgiven her rapist. “She forgives her oppressors. She is praying for everyone, including the oppressors,” Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India was quoted in a media report.
