New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested `most wanted criminal` Neeraj Bawana.
"We have arrested Neeraj Bawana early today (Tuesday) morning from Delhi," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav told a news agency.
He was arrested at around 3.45 am from west Delhi's Mundka area, following a tip-off.
With a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head, Bawana is an extortionist, who targets rich businessmen and realtors in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
Yadav said the criminal ran extortion rackets in many parts of the city and the NCR.
"Bawana's influence was considerable in the national capital, especially Outer Delhi, North Delhi and West Delhi. It was a challenge for us to arrest as soon as possible. We constituted a special team in order to catch him at the earliest," Commissioner (Special Cell) SN Shrivastava told the media here.
"On the basis of technical and human inputs, we followed him all over the country, including Kolkata, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Baroda, and finally, we received information that he would visit his residence in the Bawana region of Delhi, from where he was nabbed. We also found a US-made Smith and Wesson weapon in his possession," he added.
Shrivastava further said that Bawana will be booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
"He has been booked under IPC Sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 383 (Extortion). We have also filed a MCOCA case against him," he said.
His brother Rajesh Bawana was arrested in 2014, while his mother and other brothers were recently arrested from the Indira Gandhi International Airport while carrying illegal ammunition.
His gang had also played a role in the escape of Amit alias Bhura, who was freed from the custody of the Uttarakhand Police while he was being taken to be presented before a Baghpat Court in December 2014.
Bawana, wanted in several cases of murder and extortion, last year figured in in the list of 10 'most wanted criminals' compiled by the Delhi Police.
He is a resident of Bawana in Delhi's outer district.
