Congress lawmaker Rumi Nath arrested

ASSAM: A lawmaker from the Assam Congress Rumi Nath was arrested on Tuesday in her alleged links with a pan-India car theft racket.

“We have arrested Rumi Nath from the MLA hostel around 7AM. Presently, she is at Dispur Police Station but during the day, we shall produce her in court and request for police remand,” informed Assistant Commissioner of Police Suprotive Lal Barua.

The ACP further informed that Rumi Nath has been arrested in her reported associated with a car theft gang under Sections 120(B), 420, 212 of the Indian Penal Code which stands for criminal conspiracy, cheating and harbouring offender.

The Congress MLA had appeared before the press on Monday and stated that she was not absconding. “I am not absconding and I am innocent. If I am seeking anticipatory bail, it does not mean that I am guilty. If I am proved guilty, I am ready to go to jail”, Nath said addressing a press meet.

The Guwahati High Court had previously rejected her two anticipatory bail applications in connection with a case registered at Dispur Police Station and another at Azara police station.

Following the arrest of her separated second husband Jacky Zakir, Nath had filed for anticipatory bail on April 9.

While Zakir was picked up from his house in Badarpur in Karimganj district on April 8, the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Nath, Bedabrata Barpatra Gohain was caught from the Special Branch headquarters in the state capital.

The investigations revealed that the alleged car theft gang leader Anil Chauhan, wanted in several cases in Delhi and Mumbai apart from other cities and arrested by Guwahati Police was issued Assam Assembly car passes on the recommendation of Nath.

Following the information, the Assembly Secretariat issued a notice to Nath asking her to explain why she had recommended issuance of car passes to the alleged car lifter. The Congress MLA in her response said that she had signed the car pass application form of Chauhan’s wife who is a Congress worker.

“I have no association with Chauhan, but I know his wife who is a Congress worker. This is just a political plot to defame me but I have full faith in the law of the land and will cooperate with the police at every step,” Nath told reporters yesterday.

Assam Congress President Anjan Dutta as well issued a showcause notice to Rumi Nath for her alleged connection with the notorious car lifter.

In 2012, the controversial Congress MLA married Zakir by converting to Islam and without divorcing her first husband. Following the wedding, the couple was assaulted by a mob at a Karimganj hotel. The two then parted ways last year and have been living separately since then.
