In the crucial Maharashtra Assembly bypoll, Shiv Sena’s Trupti Sawant has defeated Congress heavyweight and former CM Narayan Rane in Bandra (East) by over 19,000 votes.

In the by-election to Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal seat of Maharashtra’s Sangli district, NCP nominee Suman Patil, the widow of NCP stalwart late R R Patil, has won by over 1.12 lakh votes.

Shiv Sena candidate Sawant, the widow of former MLA Bala Sawant whose death necessitated the bypoll in Bandra (East) seat, has polled 45,123 votes as compared to 28,433 votes polled by Rane.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) candidate Rehbar Khan has polled 10,571 votes at the end of the 13th round of counting.

Bandra (East) constituency in suburban Mumbai houses the residence of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, ‘Matoshree’. The Bandra (East) by-election was crucial for Rane who had lost the state Assembly poll last year from his home turf Sindhudurg district in coastal Konkan.

A total of 10 candidates were in the fray in Bandra (East) and nine in Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal constituency.
The bypoll for the two seats in Maharashtra was held on April 11.

Maharashtra bypoll result crucial for Narayan Rane

For the by-elections to Bandra East assembly constituency, Congress heavyweight Narayan Rane had taken on Shiv Sena and MIM rivals.

In Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal seat, Suman Patil, wife of NCP stalwart the late R R Patil is contesting.

Former chief minister Rane, who lost the Assembly election last year from his native Sindhudurg district in coastal Konkan, is trying to enter the Maharashtra Assembly through the bypoll to the Bandra (East) constituency in the metropolis.

He was pitted against Shiv Sena’s Trupti Sawant, the widow of former MLA Bala Sawant whose death necessitated the bypoll.

The fight has become triangular with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) putting up Rahbar Khan.

For Rane, this is a make-or-break contest as a defeat would mar his chances of remaining at the centrestage of Maharashtra politics.

In Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal, Suman Patil of NCP, wife of former state home minister R R Patil whose death necessitated the by-election, has the advantage as no other party has fielded any nominee against her as a mark of respect for the former deputy chief minister.

However, there has been speculation that a section of BJP covertly helped Swapnil Patil, a youth BJP leader from Tasgaon, who entered the field as an independent.
