St Mary's Church vandalised in Agra; Christian community members upset, demand action

AGRA: A bunch of unknown miscreants allegedly vandalized a church in the Cantonment area in wee hours of Thursday, triggering massive anger among the members of the local Christian community.

A group of alleged miscreants’ vandalilzed the St. Mary’s Church in Agra Cantonment's Pratabpura area in what is the latest in a spate of attacks on such institutions across the country, police said.

An FIR has already been filed against the unknown persons ay the Rakabganj police station, they said and added that two statues were found damaged along with its main gate in the church.

District and police officials reached the church in the morning to review security arrangements, police said.

In the mean while, Christian community leaders in Agra are angry about the incident and have demanded a strict action against the culprits within 24 hours.

An elderly nun was allegedly gang-raped at a convent school in West Bengal by miscreants who also looted cash from its lockers last month. Two Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in connection with the incident on March 14.

Following the West Bengal episode, a cathedral premises and a missionary school where people had gathered for a religious convention were also vandalised allegedly by Hindu activists in Jabalpur of Madhya Pradesh on March 20. 

Six people reportedly from a right-wing Hindu group were caught in the case but were later released on bail.
