BHUBANESWAR: Former Assam Governor and three-time Odisha Chief Minister Governor Janaki Ballabh Patnaik on Tuesday passed away at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

Patnaik, a veteran Congress leader, had gone to Tirupati on Monday to attend the convocation of Tirupati Rashtriya Sanskruta University as the Chief Guest. He was the University’s chancellor, said the family sources.

According to his son-in-law Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, 89-year-old Patnaik complained of severe chest pain following which he was admitted to a private hospital where he died at 3 am.

The body of late leader will be flown to Bhubaneswar in the afternoon for the last rites at Swargadwara in Puri.

Patnaik, born on January 3, 1927, had returned to Odisha in December 2014 after serving as Assam Governor. He was the Chief Minister of Odisha from 1980 to 1989 and from 1995 to 1999 and was also the Leader of Opposition assembly from 2004 to 2009.
