CHANDIGARH: The crops on several thousand acres of land have been ruined in many states due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms creating great distress among farmers and financial trouble for lakhs of them.
While several farmers and agricultural labourers have already committed suicide, many others are still burdened with huge loans which they are not able to pay due to loss of produce.
Even though the Central and state government are trying to reach out to the affected farmers to extend a helping hand to them, Haryana Agriculture Minister Om Prakash Dhankar has offered an extremely insensitive remark tagging farmers committing suicide as ‘cowards’.
The minister made it clear that his government will not help families of those farmers and agricultural labourers who have committed suicide as the administration is not for the ‘cowards’.
Slamming the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi over the suicide of a Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh during their rally in the national capital, Dhankar accused the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of playing politics over the matter.
Congress on the other hand criticized Dhankar for his insensitive comments and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar of not being sympathetic towards the farming community.
Ashok Tanwar, Haryana Congress chief stated the recent wave of farmers’ suicides was unfortunate and the state government is not interested in it and was instead compounding the problem.
