KERALA: A 15-year-old female athlete was killed on Thursday and three others are hospitalized after they consumed poisonous fruit in an apparent suicide pact following alleged harassment by the seniors. All four were undergoing training at Water Sports Centre of Sports Authority of India.

According to the reports, the girls are suspected to have consumed the fruit, locally called ‘Othalanga’, at around 3 PM on Wednesday within the premises of SAI women’s hostel.

After they fainted around 7 PM, they were rushed to the hospital and later taken to Alapuzha Medical College where one of them was declared dead.

The families of the athletes have accused the seniors of harassment and claimed that the girls were being physically and mentally tortured by them.

The hostel warden however, denied the charges and maintained that they came to know about the condition of girls only after they fainted and they were not under any pressure from anyone. “None in the hostel tortured them” she said.

The family members of the girl who died in the incident said that they will not perform the last rites of the girl until an immediate inquiry is ordered and the guilty is brought to book. They also threatened to block the National Highway.

Meanwhile, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has instructed the Sports Authority of India Chief to investigate the incident and the allegations of harassment.
