KOLKATA: Massive fire on Monday broke out at New Market in Central Kolkata, said reports.

Around 12 fire tenders have rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, said Fire Department officials.

The fire started at the fish and the vegetable market of the iconic market and no casualties have been reported so far, officials added.

Firemen faced difficulty to bring the fire under control as the fire spread out and the area was congested. Efforts are on to evacuate people from inside the huge market but it’s unclear whether anybody is trapped inside the market.

State Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and other senior police officials have reached to the spot.

Earlier last month, a major fire broke out inside a shopping mall in the New Market area which the mall damaged.
