THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Social Welfare Minister Dr. Mk Muneer’s SUV allegedly killed a college professor after his car hit the man riding a scooter.
The minister then rushed the injured professor, identified as Shashi Kumar, to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead on Tuesday.
The accident has stormed a controversy as Muneer’s white Range Rover is registered under the name of a businessman but license plates claim it a government vehicle and the car also has red beacon.
After attack from the opposition, Chief Minsiter Oommen Chandy on Wednesday said, “There is nothing wrong using private vehicles with government number plates. Many a time we use a taxi with government number plates. The car belongs to a person from his own party.”
The businessman, official owner of the car, is a member of minister’s party, the Muslim League.
The incident occurred on Monday when the deceased professor was returning home from college, said police, adding a case has been registered against the minister’s driver.
