NEW DELHI: Prestigious St Stephen’s College of Delhi University has landed into a big trouble after a PhD student of the college has accused her Assistant Professor of sexual abuse and harassment.
A student of Post-Doctoral Thesis in Chemistry at St. Stephen’s, the girl has accused Assistant Professor Satish Kumar of harassing her for two years adding that he even sexually assaulted her in October 2013.
The victim claims of not raising the issue earlier against him as she feared for her career.
“An FIR has been registered under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and other relevant sections of the India Penal Code (IPC) against the accused professor in association with the complaint,” informed DCP North Madhur Verma.
Furious over the case, the Delhi University Teacher’s Association (DUTA) has sought the removal of the Professor.
The girl in her complaint has accused Principal Valson Thampu for ‘criminally intimidating to give a written application to him expressing her consent to close the matter in college itself in order to not cause any delay or problems in completion of her PhD’.
The Principal, however, has not been named in the registered FIR. Confirming that the victim had raised the complaint with him, he denied charges of trying to protect his Professor. “The matter has been referred to the college’s internal complaint committee, which deals with such complaints and the issue is being looked into,” he said.
He added, “The girl had raised the matter with me but had ‘insisted in writing’ that the issue not be treated as one of sexual harassment but to solely ensure that her PhD is completed on time.”
