NEW DELHI: Tibetan community on Tuesday staged a protest outside the Chinese Embassy in Delhi  on Tibetan Uprising Day.

The Tibetan protesters gathered outside the Embassy holding Tibetan flags, posters and banners with 'Free Tibet' written on them.

Police have rushed to the spot and several protesters were lathicharged. Some of them were detained by the police and have taken to Chanakyapuri police station. The detained protesters will be released shortly after their antecedents were recorded, said police in the statement.

Initially, there were only 20-25 protesters but their numbers swelled as hundreds more poured in at Chanakyapuri, where police had a tough time handling the stir.

Police personnel beefed up security in and around the Chinese Embassy. The protesters tried to march towards the embassy but were prevented by police from entering the high-security complex.
