WhatsApp, in a bold move amongst the Apple vs. FBI issue, has upgraded its privacy by rolling out updates for end-to-end encryption. While more privacy can never be a bad thing, there are some doubts as to what end-to-end encryption entails. Here are some of those doubts resolved.
How does one activate encryption?
End-to-end encryption is automatically activated on all chats as soon as the user downloads the new update. The only chats that remain unencrypted would be the ones with any users that so not yet have the update.
What does end-to-end encryption include?
Encryption includes not only chats, but WhatsApp calls too. Encryption covers all media, images, audio and video, that are sent through encrypted chats. Media sent in group chats that are not encrypted, are of course, excluded.
How does one confirm that a chat is encrypted?
Users can scan a QR code or compare a unique 60-digit number with the user at the other end of a specific chat in order to verify whether or not the chat is encrypted.
