HYDERABAD: World No 1 in Doubles, Indian Tennis player Sania Mirza on Wednesday received a warm welcome in her hometown Hyderabad after she returned from The United States (US) triumphing in the Indian Wells and Miami hard-court events.
Tennis star Sania Mirza on Sunday became the first Indian to climb to the top of the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) doubles ranking. She was given a rousing welcome by her family, friends and fans at Hyderabad airport.
28-year-old Mirza won her third successive doubles title with Hingis after beating Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak and achieved the top ranking milestone.
“I feel extremely honoured to be Number one, it’s something that I’ve worked for all my life,” Mirza said in a statement.
Before Sania, Leander Paes and Bhupathi are the only Indians who achieved the number one rankings in tennis when they dominated men’s doubles in the late 1990s.
