Germany: An own goal by Georg Niedermeier and goals by David Alaba and substitute Douglas Costa saw Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich edge past VfB Stuttgart to restore their eight-point lead at the top of the chart.
Frank Ribery’s attempt was deflected by Niedermeier in the 31st minute into the back of Stuttgart’s net.
Seven minutes into the second half, David Alaba put Bayern 2-0 up before Daniel Didavi pulled one back for Stuttgart in the 63rd minute. It was Douglas Costa, however, who sealed it for the league leaders in the 89th minute to go 3-1 up to help Bayern close in on retaining their title.
Pep Guardiola made four changes to the side that beat Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Rafinha, Javi Martínez, Xabi Alonso and Mario Götze starting in place of Philipp Lahm, Thiago Alcântara, Costa and Thomas Müller.
Earlier, Muller, not in the starting XI was sent in to replace Arturo Vidal in the 27th minute. Vidal was on a yellow card and was lucky enough to have escaped another in quick succession.
