London: Tottenham Hotspur kept their English Premier League (EPL) title hopes alive by defeating Manchester United late on Sunday. In an inspiring second-half performance, second placed Spurs registered a massive 3-0 win against a hapless fifth placed United.
Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela scored in quick succession, in the 70th, 74th and 76th minute respectively, for the Spurs. The Reds, on the other hand, clearly looked helpless. After this loss, United’s hopes, of finishing in the top four, has taken yet another hit.
Manchester United made their way to north London knowing a win would pull them back within a single point of fourth-placed Manchester City, while Spurs' hopes of a title push rested on the line.
Manchester United’s manager, who has been under the scanner for his tactics pertaining to the Red Devils’ game play, for a long time now, was yet again blamed for the disastrous show on Sunday.
Van Gaal decided at half-time to replace Marcus Rashford with Ashley Young. In itself, it was not the most senseless of decisions. However, rather than push Anthony Martial into the central striker role and use Young on his natural left side, the United manager asked the substitute to play as the lone front man.
United now sit four points behind fourth placed Manchester City on the Premier League chart. A lot of luck and a run of six straight wins, which is the last thing anyone should expect from United, is what they need to take a shot at glory one more time.
