Madrid: In what can be touted as one of most epic comebacks in the history of UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid, on Wednesday, riding on a legendary performance by Cristiano Ronaldo, romped over VfL Wolfsburg in the second leg of the quarters 3-0 (3-2 on aggregate), to advance to the semi-finals for the sixth consecutive season.
Wolfsburg came to Spain with a healthy 2-0 lead from the first leg played on their home ground. Real Madrid had faced a lot of criticism for their under par performance just about a week ago.
Ronaldo, however, had other plans. Just 16 minutes into the high pressure game at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, swept one past Diego Benaglio from six yards and then struck a perfect header 88 seconds later to go level against the German club.
Wolfsburg managed to hold their fort for a while after Ronaldo’s exploits but the Real number 7 was not done yet. Luiz Gustavo saw a yellow card for his foul on Luka Modric just outside the box and gave Cristiano another shot at glory in the 77th minute of the game.
The Portuguese struck a swerving free-kick so powerful that the Wolfsburg wall could only hope to block and rip up the scripts that the legend of Ronaldo continues to write. That put Real 3-2 ahead on aggregate. It also marked Cristiano’s 16th Champions League goal in 10 games this season.
It completed a remarkable turnaround by the 10-time champions of Europe and keeps alive a season that looked to be over for Zinedine Zidane's side after last week's loss in Germany.
Real Madrid now face Manchester City on , who sidelined Paris Saint Germain (PSG) to book themselves a spot in semis for the first time in the history of the English club.
