New Delhi: India’s Test skipper Virat Kohli has been recommended by BCCI for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award — the nation’s biggest sporting honour. Kohli’s teammate Ajinkya Rahane has been nominated for the Arjuna Award. These nominations by the BCCI, for the highest sports award, have come after a gap of 4 years.
Virat Kohli replaced MS Dhoni as team India’s captain for test cricket has been India’s ‘good’ guy in the recent past. The Delhi lad also led the side to win over SL in SOuth Africa.
Rahane on the other hand is India’s new Mr Consistent. He has been team India’s best bet in overseas conditions.
The Khel Ratna award will carry a cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakhs while the Arjuna Award will carry a cash prize of 5 lakh.
The nominations have come from the BCCI for now. Other sports bodies & associations will send their (athletes) nominations as well.
The other sportspersons who have been nominated for the Arjuna Awards so far are athletes Lalita Babar and OP Jaisha, shooters PN Prakash and Apurvi Chandela, and archer Laxmirani Majhi.
The BCCI had nominated the former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid for the award in 2012, but shooter Vijay Kumar and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt were finally picked for the prestigious award for winning medals at the London Olympics that year.
On Kohli’s and Rahane’s nominations for the awards, Honorary Secretary of BCCI Anurag Thakur said, “The way their performance was, they deserve it.”
