Rajkot: Riding on Rishab Pant’s blistering 69-run knock off 40 deliveries and Quentin de Cock’s run-a-ball 46, Delhi Daredevils avenged their last week’s defeat to Gujarat Lions, eclipsing the 150-run target in just 17.2 overs at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday.
Delhi openers Pant and Cock had departed in quick succession, but not before putting up a 115-run stand for the first wicket to put the match out of the grasp of hosts Gujarat Lions.
Ravindra Jadeja managed to provide a breakthrough for the Gujarat Lions in the 14th over when he had Rishab Pant caught behind. Pant, however, had done the damage before taking a walk back to the pavilion. The left-handed teenager ripped through the Lions’ bowling attack, scoring 69 off 40 deliveries.
Earlier in the Gujarat Lions’ innings, a valiant 53 off 43 by Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja’s 36 in the dying stages of the innings saw the hosts post a decent 149 on the board against some disciplined bowling by the Delhi Daredevils bowlers.
Looking to up the ante against the visitors, Suresh Raina had taken it upon him to lead from the front. His outing, however, did not last long. Amit Mishra foxed the Gujarat Lions captain with a delivery far from the southpaw’s reach before Quentin de Cock knocked the bails off to send Raina back to pavilion for 24 off 20 deliveries.
Delhi Daredevils had roared first in the Lions’ own backyard when Shahbaz Nadeem scalped two and Zaheer Khan knocked out Brendon McCullum to put Gujarat Lions on the backfoot. The dangerous duo of Dwayne Smith and Aaron Finch hardly had an impact on the scorecard before they were sent back to the hut. McCullum could only manage 1.
Delhi Daredevils had won the toss and elected to field against Gujarat Lions in the 31st match of the Indian Premier League season 9 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday.
The last time Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils locked horns, Feroz Shah Kotla was set on fire. And the man responsible was Daredevil Chris Morris. Despite his heroics, 82 off 32, Zaheer Khan-led DD fell short by just one run.
