New Delhi: Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta and five other Indian shuttlers have officially earned their respective berths for the Rio Olympics 2016 to be held in Rio de Janerio from August 5-21.

The qualification for the quadrennial sports gala was confirmed when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings were released on Thursday.

The released rankings were used to determine the Olympic qualifiers in all the five categories — men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles — keeping in mind the points garnered in the period between May 4, 2015 and May 1st, 2016.

Saina Nehwal, London Olympics bronze medallist, will be representing India at the Olympics for the third time while the pair of Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa will play in their second. However, for K Srikanth (men’s singles), PV Sindhu (women’s singles) and the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Summeth Reddy, Rio will be their first ever Olympics appearance.

In the 2012 London Olympics, India had five shuttlers striving for a podium finish.
