Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo found the net twice while Karim Benzema scored once in 3-2 win over Valencia to keep Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga 2016 title race after Atletico Madrid faltered in their 37th game against Levante.
The star striker, who has had a sensation season thus far, began the proceeding in the 26th minute, his 48th goal of the season overall, after Marcelo put one right at the Portuguese’s feet who dodged past Abdennour to put one into the bottom left corner before a thunderous Bernabeu crowd.
Benzema was then denied in the 32nd minute when Barragan’s block hit Benzema and went out for a goal kick. Ten minutes later the Frenchman slid one past the Valencia keeper to put Real 2-0 up. The linesman initially ruled it as an offside but the referee quickly overruled it in favour of the hosts.
Rodrigo brought the visitors back in the game in the 55th minute with a strike into the top right corner. An air-borne Marcelo put his head to the ball but in vain.
Ronaldo continued to prove why he is regarded as one of the best ever to walk a football pitch. Taking the onus on his strong shoulders, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner, lifted his 49th goal of the season into the roof of the net after an impeccable pass from James just four minutes after Rodrigo had given Valencia some hope.
The fight continued with Valencia creating enough chances to threaten the Los Blancos. Casilla, however, unrelentingly denied the visitors with some fabulous saves.
It was in the 81st minute when Andre Gomes lit up the Bernabeu with a strike worth watching a million times. Pajero passed one on to the substitute who then curled one into the top corner of the far post.
Valencia failed to find the net after Gomes’ brilliance keeping Real Madrid in the hunt for the La Liga 2016 title.
The 3-2 win in their 37th outing this season means that La Liga's title race will go to the final day!
