Visakhapatnam: The Delhi Daredevils’ chances of clinching a quicker spot at the Indian Premier League play-offs was prolonged after Dhoni’s Rising Pune Supergiants beat them by 19 runs with the application of the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-battered game. But even without the interruption of rain, Daredevils’ chances of making to the play-offs was slight because they registered only a meager 121 in the first half of the match.
The Delhi Daredevils registered a poor score of 121/6 in the first half of the match at Visakhapatnam. Medium pacer Ashok Dinda (3-20) and leg-spinner Adam Zampa (3-21) helped Rising Pune Supergiants restrict Delhi Daredevils to 121 for six in 20 overs during their Indian Premier League (IPL) tie at the VCA Stadium here on Tuesday.
Asked to bat, Delhi struggled as Dinda and Zampa continued their impressive performance to leave the visitors struggle for runs.
Karun Nair (41 off 43 deliveries) anchored Delhi’s innings, while South African all-rounder Chris Morris made a quick-fire 38 in just 20 balls towards the end to help his side cross 120-run mark.
Delhi got off to a bad start, losing openers Quinton de Kock (2) and Shreyas Iyer (8) inside five overs to Dinda. While left-hander de Kock was plumb in front of the stumps, Iyer attempted a bad pull as he was caught at deep square leg by Usman Khawaja.
Rising Pune Supergiants won the toss and elected to bowl first for the match.
After being thrashed by Mumbai Indians in their previous match, Delhi Daredevils will aim to roar back into the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs reckoning when they take on bottom-placed Rising Pune Supergiants here on Tuesday.
Placed at the fifth spot with six wins from 11 matches, Daredevils will hope for some consistency in their remaining three league matches to book a place in the play-offs.
On the other hand, already ousted from the race to the play-offs, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side Pune will aim to finish their debut season on a high after having managed to win just three matches out of 12.
Going into Tuesday’s encounter at the VCA Stadium, the Zaheer Khan-led side will aim to put behind its huge 80-run loss to Rohit Sharma’s team and hope the batsmen put up a strong performance.
The batting will once again revolve around Rishabh Pant, Quinton de Kock, keeper-batsman Sanju Samson and Karun Nair with all-rounders Chris Morris and Carlos Brathwaite providing the late order fireworks.
Delhi’s bowling is led by an impressive Zaheer who has nine wickets so far in the tournament. He will once again have to marshall his unit well along with Mohammed Shami and the duo of Morris and Brathwaite.
The team can also bank on the leg-spin duo of Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir, who have been impressive in the tournament so far along with left-armer Shahbaaz Nadeem.
On the other side, Pune will be aiming to finish their campaign on a winning note after a lacklustre debut in the cash-rich league.
Having lost their premier foreign recruits to injuries, the side will bank on a strong show from the ever-dependable Ajinkya Rahane and skipper Dhoni. Saurabh Tiwary and all-rounder Thisara Perera have been mostly inconsistent in their contributions.
The bowling will be led by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been a shadow of his impressive self in the tournament so far.
Leg-spinners Murugan Ashwin and Adam Zampa will once again be Dhoni’s go-to bowlers along with the pace duo of Ashok Dinda and R.P. Singh.
