Mary Kom inches closer to Rio 2016 berth

New Delhi: Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom, on Thursday, romped over Juliana Soderstrom of Sweden in the first round of the Women’s Boxing World Championships.

The ace Indian boxer won the bout 3:0.

The Boxing World Championships is the final Olympics qualifier for the women boxers with 12 spots up for grabs in a total of three categories.

Sarita Devi and Pooja Rani, apart from the Manipuri boxer, are hoping to qualify for the Rio Olympics 2016.

Mary Kom (51kg), Sarita Devi (60kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg) will have to reach the semi-final stage in order to assure themselves a spot at the Olympics. The three had earlier failed to qualify in the Asian Olympic qualifiers in Quian’an, China in March, earlier this year.
