New Delhi: After BJP party member Sarbanand Sonowal resigned from the Union Cabinet as the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, the anointment of Jitendra Singh to the position has raised questions about the plight of Indian sports and the government’s support in the upcoming Rio Olympics 2016.
Dr Singh already holds six other portfolios as MOS — Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space.
The anointment of an additional charge, that too at so relevant a stage in sports has raised questions about how India is preparing for the upcoming Olympics with less than 10 weeks to go.
The Rio Olympics begins on August 5, 2016, and ends on August 21, 2016. Singh has assumed responsibility at a sensitive stage of Indian sports where potential Indian Olympians will look for support from the government.
