Paris: Defending champion Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday produced a superior performance as he fended off Japan’s Taro Daniel in straight sets to surge into the third round of the French Open, here at the Roland Garros.
 
The third-seed recovered from the third-set break down to record a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-4 win over his Japanese opponent in a thrilling second round contest.
 
With the win, Wawrinka has now set up a clash against 32nd-ranked Frenchman Jeremy Chardy for a place in the last 16.
 
Meanwhile, fifth-seed Kei Nishikori also romped into the next round after seeing off Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov in straight sets.
 
The Asian champion struck 31 winners and broke the serve six times to defeat his Russian opponent 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round clash.
