Rio Olympics 2016: AITA pairs Leander Paes with Rohan Bopanna, says veteran best bet for India

New Delhi: In a press conference called by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Saturday pertaining to the selection of men's doubles players at the Rio Olympics 2016, the committee overturned Bopanna's decision and officially guaranteed a spot for Leander Paes.

Calling Leander Paes the best bet for India at the Rio Olympics, the AITA said that Bopanna's letter detailing why Saketh was the better match in the men's doubles had been thoroughly analysed by the AITA. "Bopanna only wants to do what is best for his nation," Anil Khanna said, and added that Saketh was also an immensely talented player.

The vice president of AITA then went on to compare the statistics of Bopanna-Paes partnership with that of Bopanna-Saketh partnership, the former having registered better results till now.

Announcing the players for the mixed doubles, Anil said that Bopanna and Sania Mirza is the choice of the AITA for the upcoming Olympics.

In the women's doubles, owing to the ranking statistics, Prarthana Thombare will be partnering with Sania Mirza; the duo having already played together in other matches.

Leander Paes will now be appearing for a record 7th time in the Olympics.
