New Delhi: It was an action-packed and nerve-wracking experience for football fans as world champions Germany kept their calm to get past Ukraine 2-0 in the Euro Cup 2016.
It certainly wasn’t a great day for Ukraine as they missed out three clean chances in the first half of the game, which might have allowed them an edge over the Germans. The Ukrainians must have been very disappointed with their 2nd half display considering the troubles they had caused to Germany’s defense in the 1st half.
For the Germans, Jerome Boateng cleared off the line superbly while Manuel Neuer made good saves. Toni Kroos was at his very best at the heart of their midfield, with Germany’s attritional passing play eventually wearing down Ukraine and not allowing them their chances.
An early headed goal from Shkodran Mustafi gave Germany the lead which was followed by a late scare with Bastian Schweinsteiger wrapping up the result in the 92nd minute with his brilliant counter goal. This was Bastian’s first goal since 2011 for his country.
Despite a mercurial performance from Toni Kroos and an early headed goal from Shkodran Mustafi, the Germans were troubled at the back at times, but Ukraine failed to convert the chances to their advantage.
