Sri Lankan player tweets about ‘horrendous experience’ in UK. Kumar Sangakkara another victim of racism?

NEW DELHI: Star Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara has reportedly become another victim of racism in the United Kingdom after he tweeted about his ‘horrendous experience’ with an immigration official at London airport.

Even though 37-year-old Sangakkara has been travelling to the United Kingdom for more than 15 years, but the celebrity performer experienced the ugly side of immigration for the first time in the country on Friday.

Reports suggest that the left-handed batsman was repeatedly questioned by an immigration officer as he arrived to play for country side Surrey. It happened in spite of him visiting the UK just weeks ago for a country match against Essex.

Even if Sangakkara did not share much details of the incident, the annoyance of the cricketer with a staff member was clearly visible in his posts on Twitter.

“Back in London last night. Had a horrendous experience with a rude, patronising and extremely discourteous UK immigration officer,” expressed Kumar.

This tweet was then followed by a series of other posts on the micro-blogging where he has over 389K followers.

“I understand the need for vigilance completely but common courtesy and manners is not too much to ask for,” he wrote.

What came as relief for the cricketer was that the other members of the immigration staff were relatively courteous.

“Luckily the rest of the UK immigration officers were lovely. Coming to the UK for 15 years and first time I have encountered this,” Sangakkara tweeted.

Regarded as one of the best players on the field and a gentleman off it, Kumar Sangakkara has enjoyed a memorable cricketing career.

Sri Lanka is reporting the recent incident with Sangakkara as another case of racism where Sangakkara too hinted towards the same in his final message indirectly.

“No matter colour, religion or fame every well intentioned traveller deserves courtesy. Luckily for me it was one person and just this once,” he wrote.

It seems that the United Kingdom is still living under the superiority complex given that at one point of history, the British almost ruled the entire globe.

The country, even today, is amongst the top racist countries especially towards what they call ‘Desi’ people. It also includes people from the Indian subcontinent and many other Asian countries.

Besides this, hatred from some part of UK has also been witnessed against Americans who are often tagged as ‘Yankees’ by them.

Also, UK is seen showing hatred towards French, Romanians, and Bulgarians etc.
