New Delhi: After a hopeful and dominant Argentina lost to Chile in a penalty shoot-out at the finals of the Copa America 2016, international football superstar Lionel Messi announced that he was going to retire from international football.

Lionel Messi, who is 29 years of age, has not hastened to this decision of retiring from the international football scenario. With Argentina hitherto setting out four final clashes with the help of Lionel Messi, a title has eluded them so far, making the Barcelona player crumble in exhaustion on his 112th appearance for his country.

In the penalty shoot-out, Messi missed the first goal — his shot went wide, out and away from the goalkeeper. And the rest of his Argentinean team tried hard to stick true to their guts while their captain rolled on in the pitch to their side.

"For me the national team is over. I've done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion," said the Argentinean star who also saw his team lose 1-0 to Germany in the last World Cup. Apart from a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Messi has not been part of the celebration of an international event.
