New Delhi: It’s almost upon us…Rio 2016 is about to get started! For the next 17 days, top athletes will take centre stage in Rio de Janeiro, enthralling the world with their skills at the biggest global sporting extravaganza.
But should fans be excited?
This question comes up because everything that could go wrong is going wrong in Brazil.
Brazil is facing a political crisis, with President Dilma Rouseff facing impeachment over a corruption scandal. Concerns over Zika virus too have forced many top athletes to pull out. The country is already in the middle of its worst economic recession since 1990s. The world is aware of Rio’s high crime rate. Infrastructure problems have not helped matters either.
Could things be any worse? How can Rio 2016 be successful?
After the spectacular event that London organised in 2012, Rio already has a tough act to follow. But instead of feeling the heat, Rio should take it in a positive stride. What’s more, Brazil can take inspiration from 2014, when it successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup in almost similar circumstances.
Moreover, as fans should we give up on Rio just yet? No!
Come on Rio, put on a show! Christ the Redeemer is with you…
