New Delhi: A national-level gold medallist athlete has been arrested on the charge of helping a dreaded gangster escape from police custody, Delhi Police said on Monday.

Accused Parveen Panchi alias Lara, 22, was arrested on August 5 from Narela in west Delhi for helping Jitender escape when four armed Delhi Police guards were escorting him for appearance in a Narwana court in Haryana on July 30.

Panchi, a resident of Sonepat in Haryana, was a gold medallist in 400 metres race in a national-level meet in 2013.

Panchi committed the crime with the help of accomplices Gulshan, Sanjay, Rohit, Mohit, Boxer, Deepak, Irfaan and two others.

“The gang snatched a car from Bawana (west Delhi) to commit the crime. Most of them were armed with weapons,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav said.

Panchi told the police that he along with two others boarded the bus in which Jitender was being taken for court appearance from the Maharana Pratap Inter-State Bus Terminus in Delhi.

“On the way, another accomplice boarded the bus and kept its back door open, as planned.

“The bus was intercepted by other armed assailants in two cars near Bahadurgarh in Haryana. They threw chilli powder in the eyes of the police escort party members and whisked away Jitender. They also robbed an automatic firearm from policemen,” Yadav said.

Two accused — Boxer and Mohit — were arrested in the case on August 2.
