New Delhi: Actor Salman Khan, who was earlier appointed as Goodwill Ambassadors for Rio by the Indian Olympics Association (IOA), on Sunday forgot the name of the gymnast Dipa Karmakar and called her Deepika at an event.

A journalist asked Salman about Dipa at his brother Suhail Khan’s Freaky Ali trailer launch and Salman forgot the name of the star gymnast.

I thought... it was... was it Deepika? I thought she was going to win gold but she came eighth, no," Salman said.

Later, a reporter at the event suggested that it is Deepti, to which Salman said, “Oh yeah, Deepti.”

Ironically, Salman had written in April, “Let’s cheer our 2016 Olympic stars. Here’s Dipa Karmakar #YouMakeUsProud.”

Despite the protests by the sporting community, Salman Khan was appointed as the Rio Goodwill Ambassador by the Indian Olympics Association.

However, Salman defended his appointment by saying, "Are all kids, who have tried out certain sports but haven’t won a medal, not sports persons? Aren’t all the kids or other persons, who like and follow particular sports persons? If they are, then why just pick on me?"
