New Delhi: 23-year-old Dipa Karmakar, who fell few points short of inching towards the bronze medal podium, might soon be conferred with the prestigious Khel Ratna award on National Sports Day.

Albeit Dipa Karmakar could not bag a medal for India, Dipa created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to enter the vaults final at the Olympics. On top of that, Dipa gave an awe-struck performance which unfortunately fell a sliver of a point behind the bronze medallist.

Dipa's coach is also recommended for the Dhronacharya award for his coaching of the Indian athlete.

If confirmed, Dipa will receive the Khel Ratna from Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on National Sports Day.

India is yet to bag a medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 being held in the Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro.
