New Delhi: India registered its name in the medals tally at the Rio Paralympics 2016 when Mariyappan Thangavelu won a gold and Varun Bhati a bronze medal in the men’s T42 High Jump event.
Mariyappan Thangavelu created history on Saturday morning by becoming the first high-jumper to win gold at the Paralympics by registering a best mark of 1.89 metres. Varun Bhati won a bronze with a leap of 1.86 metres.

USA’s Sam Grewe won silver by finishing second.
India’s other competitor Sharad Kumar finished at number six.
