New York: Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka beat World No. 1 Novak Djokovic by 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 to clinch his maiden US Open title on Monday.
Serbia’s Djokovic made a briiliant start by winning the first set, but lost his way as the Swiss made a strong comeback displaying splendid mix of shot-making.
“My goal is to give everything I have to be the best I can,” said Wawrinka after his victory.
The 31-year-old Wawrinka is the oldest US Open men’s champion since Ken Roswell who claimed the title in 1970. With this win, Wawrinka has added 3 grandslam titles to his kitty, he had earlier bagged Australian Open in 2014 and French Open in 2015.
