New Delhi: In the Champions League group stage match on Wednesday night between Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon, fans all over the world witnessed the classic perseverance that has won Real Madrid many games in the past. Sporting was actually leading Real Madrid by one goal, but it all changed with Cristiano Ronaldo.
At the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, Sporting Lisbon took the first goal with Bruno Cesar sending in a low shot. When it almost looked like Real would lose its opener against Lisbon, Ronaldo's free kick secured an almost unexpected goal for the Spanish team.
And then to cap it all off, Real's Alvaro Morata scored a beautiful header to decisively take the match in Madrid's favour. It was vaguely similar to the match against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Here's the highlight:
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane had this to say after the match was over: "We are Madrid. We know that every game will be difficult. But we also know that in any moment we can make the difference. In a game like today, when it seems it will be difficult, we get the three points. I stick with that -- it makes me smile and be relaxed. We cannot win every game 5-0. That does not exist. Today we suffered, but we got the win."
And the star of the game, Alvaro Morata, said, We didn't start the game well, but this is Madrid, and at this club and in this stadium anything can happen. Sometimes football is not fair. Today it was not fair, but it was fundamental to win and we did that."
