New Delhi: Sri Lanka swing bowler Nuwan Kulasekara, who was involved in a fatal road accident where a 28-year-old man died, has been released on bail.
According to reports, the incident happened when Kulasekara was on his way to Colombo from Kandy. A motorcycle rider who was travelling in the opposite direction apparently lost control and veered into his path on a motorway.
Following the incident, Kulasekara was detained by the police but later released on bail.
“He was briefly held as part of routine investigations and released,” a police official at Kadawatha, 15 kilometres (10 miles) east of Colombo, said. “The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries but there were no other casualties.”
Sri Lanka Cricket also sent out a statement and said, “Sri Lanka Cricket had expressed its sincere condolences on the tragic demise of a 28-year-old youth in an accident involving Sri Lanka cricketer Nuwan Kulasekara earlier today.”
Kulasekara, who reached the top of ODI bowler rankings in 2009 played 21 Tests, capturing 48 wickets before retiring from Test cricket in June to concentrate on shorter formats of the game.
