New Delhi: In a big blow to All-India Tennis Association, Sports Ministry on Wednesday declared the elections invalid accusing AITA of forging Ministry’s stamps and signatures.
“In view of this, the elections of AITA on September 3, 2016, cannot be considered valid,” said a Sports Ministry note accessed by newspaper ‘The Tribune’.
Earlier, Anil Khanna had been elected as the AITA President for a second term in the elections held earlier this year. However, he had refused to take charge unless the government resolved the contentious sports code issue.
Former Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had threatened the de-recognition of elections if Anil Khanna does not step down.
The Sports Ministry had expressed serious reservations about Khanna’s appointment as ‘Life President’, in complete violation of the Sports Code, and told AITA to hold elections for the president’s post within three months.
In view of the incident, AITA is no longer eligible to host national and state-level championships from the Ministry’s National Sports Development Fund.
