Old Trafford: Manchester United sealed the quarterfinal berth by beating arch-rivals Manchester City 1-0 in their EFL Cup derby on Wednesday.
Spaniard Juan Mata scored for Reds in second-half of the match to register a narrow victory over their local rivals, finally settling the gloom which had surrounded the team after their humiliating 4-0 loss to Chelsea in the previous match.
“I think it was very important to win after the defeat we had in London. It was a massive game for us, a derby, and it’s always difficult to play against Manchester City as they play very good football. We gave one hundred percent and we won today,” a delighted Mata said after the win.
There was no relief for City however as they continued their lackluster run under manager Pep Guardiola. City have now failed to register a single victory in their last six games.
Manchester United will now host West Ham United in the quarterfinal at Old Trafford next Tuesday.
