New Delhi: The legendary midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo has recently expressed his regret for never playing under coach Pep Guardiola.

Pirlo, who now plies his trade in the MLS for New York City FC, was once contacted by Barcelona in 2010 while he was contracted to AC Milan at that time. Pep was in charge of the Barcelona team back then that won an astonishing 14 trophies in 3 years.

But after his AC Milan stint came to an end, Pirlo moved to Juventus and won consecutive Scudetti for them.

While speaking to a leading Spanish daily, Pirlo said, “How did I feel when he wanted to sign me? How could you not want to go there?”

“Look at what he did with Barcelona and also Bayern Munich. Above all, he’s a person I’ve had the pleasure of knowing, I admire and respect. We speak quite often now, because we have mutual friends,” said the Italian footballer.

He added, “We were facing the best team in the world and he told me he wanted me in the team. He met me in his office after the game; we spoke for a long time. Pep as a coach? He’s No. 1, without a doubt.”
