New Delhi: Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has evidently made it clear about why he decided to drop England striker Wayne Rooney off from the team against the match with Arsenal.

Mourinho, who wanted more pace in the field, said that Rooney had been dropped out of starting XI because he was too slow. Instead of relying on the striker, he called in Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to carry the game for the team.

“I thought we were going to have the ball,” said the Portuguese coach. “Arsenal are a team who let the opponents play.

“I thought we would have space and the ball would arrive quite easily to the attacking players. I believed ones like Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were faster than Wayne — better attacking opponents one-to-one in the last line. I thought it was the best option,” Mourinho said.

Mourinho also faces the tough decision whether to keep midfielder Michael Carrick in the team or not.

Manchester United drew a frustrating 1-1 against Arsenal.
