Mohali: England managed to post a score of 268/8 against the brilliant bowling attack of India at stumps of the first Day of the third Test in Mohali on Saturday.
England batsmen miserably failed after Captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat at Punjab Cricket Association I.S. Bindra Cricket Stadium. The visitors made a stuttering start to the innings as they lost 4 wickets at the score of 87.
Openers Cook and Haseeb Hameed were shown the way back to the pavilion at scores of 27 and 9, respectively. The situation for England cricket team got even worse when men in form, Joe Root (15) and Moeen Ali (16) got out cheaply.
Wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow was the only shining light among the abysmal England batsmen, as he scored a fine knock of 89. Stokes (29) played a short-lived partnership of 67 runs with Bairstow, while Jos Buttler (43) helped in taking the score past the 250-mark for the English outfit.
Chris Woakes was bowled by Umesh Yadav at 25. Adil Rashid and Gareth Batty were still at the crease when the day’s play ended.
Indian bowling was at its brilliant best as all the five bowlers contributed well and has at least a wicket in their name.
Umesh Yadav, Jayant Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each while Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami got out one batsman each.
The Punjab Cricket Association I.S. Bindra Cricket Stadium has been a lucky ground for the Indian team as they have not lost a Test match at this venue for the last 22 years.
They lost the first Test to be hosted in this stadium in 1994 against the West Indies. It was their last Test defeat at this ground and since then, India have won six Tests and drawn five here.
