New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo was on target twice as Real Madrid cruised to a narrow 2-1 victory against Sporting Gijon on Saturday at Santiago Bernabeu.

La Liga leaders Real Madrid started without Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale against Sporting Gijon but two goals from talisman Cristiano Ronaldo was enough to see off the visitors.

Ronaldo converted the penalty given in the 5th minute of the game when Lucas Vazquez was tripped in the penalty box by a Gijon defender.

In the 18th minute, Ronaldo again rose to the occasion and gave Zinedine Zidane’s men a 2-0 lead with a headed finish to Nacho’s cross.

Sporting Gijon’s Carmona pulled one back for his team ten minutes before the half time.

Gijon came close to levelling the score when Nacho made a clumsy tackle on Victor and referee awarded the penalty but to their misery, Duje Cop awfully missed the penalty shot.

This win keeps Real Madrid at the top with a comfortable lead of 4 points over fierce rivals Barcelona in the La Liga table.
