Bogota: A plane carrying 72 passengers which included the Chapecoense FC squad from Brazil and 9 other crew members on board crashed in Colombia on Monday night.
Of the 81 passengers, 76 bodies have been recovered and 5 people have been rescued alive, as per aviation authorities.
The plane crashed en route to Jose Maria Cordova International Airport in Rionegro, 45 minutes away from Medellin. The reason for the crash has been ascertained as fuel shortage, reports said.
The passengers were being evacuated from the scene, La Union fire department commander said.
Alan Ruschel, a defender for Chapecoense, was among the survivors and being treated at a nearby hospital. He was taken for radiology examination in stable condition.
Brazil’s local club football side Chapecoense FC were travelling to play a Copa Sudamericana finals match against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional.
After learning of the crash, the South American football confederation CONMEBOL said the football tournament has been suspended, El Universo reported.
