Joe Root was appointed as England’s new Test captain on Monday. He will be succeeding Alastair Cook who resigned from the post earlier this month.

The 26-year-old batsman earlier met England’s director of cricket, Andrew Strauss and was offered to take up the job.

“It is a huge honour to be given the England Test captaincy,” Root said after accepting the offer.

He added that he was excited about his new role as captain.

“I feel privileged, humbled and very excited,” he said.

Alastair cook had stepped down as England’s Test captain on February 6 after leading the team in record 59 matches.
