After Barcelona’s shocking 4-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain at the Round of 16 in the Champions League, many believe that the Catalan giants might not be what they used to be once. One of those who hold this notion is former AC Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi who remarked that “the king of Barcelona is dead”.
“I see Juventus perfectly suited for that role. They are improving and, at the moment, are the favourites along with Real Madrid to take the trophy,” the former Juventus coach said when asked about Barcelona’s clash with Juventus.
“For some time, Barcelona have not been the old Barcelona. In La Liga they also beat the weak clubs with ease, but struggle with stronger sides. You no longer see that aggressive, organised and hungry team we so admired. The Catalans dominated for 10 years, imposing a style of play that was at times truly marvellous. They gave a football lesson to the whole world,” he said.
Messi and his Barcelona companions proved ineffective and weak against PSG in their last match; sparking speculations about the club leaving its prime years in the past.
However, Barcelona has a shot at entering the league again in the second leg against PSG. For the improbable to happen, Barcelona will have to revive their past-glorious performances.
“Now they’ve hit a brick wall and even Leo Messi can’t skip past his man anymore, because the whole machinery of the team is broken down,” the former coach said.
