Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla will miss the rest of the English Premier League (EPL) season due to an ankle injury.

The Spaniard has not played since October when pain caused him to leave the field during the UEFA Champions League’s group stage game against Bulgarian side Ludogorets 0-6, reports Efe on Thursday.

Cazorla was operated upon in December and was expected to recover within three months.

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, who considers Cazorla as an important part in the Gunners line-up, was hoping he would make his return within the next few weeks.

Last season, he was off the pitch for seven months because of a knee injury.

Cazorla, whose contract concludes at the end of this season, joined the Gunners in 2012.

The 32-year-old former Malaga midfielder’s absence will be a huge blow for Wenger’s side who are already struggling after being recently thrashed 5-1 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.

The Spanish International is now focusing on being fit for next season.
