NEW DELHI: BBCIndia made a faux pas soon after Indian Tennis ace Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis from Switzerland won the Wimbledon women’s doubles. The official account of BBC India just mentioned about Hingis on Twitter while completely sidelining Mirza. The tweet from the official account of BBC India earlier said, “Hingis wins Wimbledon doubles final.”
The ignorance towards India’s Sania Mirza did not go too well with the Union HRD Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani who publicly raised an objection over it and demanded to rectify the sentence.
In her reply to BBC India, Smriti wrote, “So does Sania Mirza.”
@BBCIndia so does Sania Mirza

The BBCIndia was forced to issue a clarification immediately after the tweet from the Union Minister and remove the previous post from their account.
Rectifying its comment, BBCIndia then posted, “India’s Sania Mirza wins women’s Wimbledon doubles with Martina Hingis: (Correcting earlier tweet - apologies!).”

The tweet from BBCIndia created a storm on Twitter social media where several people have tagged the organization as racist.
Further in its clarification tweet, BBC said, “It was an automated tweet, which we corrected and apologised for (sic).”
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis beat Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 in a exciting women’s doubles final at the Wimbledon.
