India’s Olympic bronze medallist turned professional boxer Vijender Singh will make a return to the boxing ring after seven months. The 31 year old will go up against China’s Zulpikar Maimaitiali, in a winner takes all fight, today in Mumbai.

Vijender’s WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title and Zulpikar’s Oriental Super Middleweight title will be up for grabs when the two clash today at the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Worli, Mumbai. This will be Vijender’s first fight in Mumbai after previously competing in a match in Delhi. He will try to keep his winning streak, as well as his title intact in his 9th professional bout.

Maimaitiali is 23, young, brutal and can sure give Vijender a run for his money. The number one Chinese has been a force in the ring and has been undefeated in his last 9 bouts with 8 wins and a draw. Apart from the age factor on his side the 23 year old also is a southpaw which earns him a decent advantage over Vijender who would bet on his orthodox methods in the fight.

Vijender, ahead of the “Battleground Asia” has termed his opponent as inexperienced and is confident of continuing his winning streak. His last fight was in December, 2016 when he successfully defended his WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title against the Tanzanian pro boxer francis cheka.

Amid the growing political tensions between India and China, the fight has gain huge popularity amongst all boxing fans, who are bidding on Vijender to get home a win against the Chinese.  The boxer himself has claimed its India versus China;

“This is India versus China, I don’t need anything and I am excited, I know the whole of India is with me,” Vijender told the media ahead of the much awaited fight.

Talking about his strategy and game plan against his worthy Chinese opponent, Viju seemed ready and confident. He also mentioned he will execute the fight according to his opponents play;

“I am very confident and hope that the fight will be good and India will win, my strategy will majorly depend on how he (Maimaitiali) plays, I will set my game according to him I have worked on my technique.”
